Foods With Gluten Are Everywhere.. Here's Some Help Navigating.......







Many foods with gluten are masked well. Many people ask me this question or summarize it by saying "So you are all just avoiding bread?". Not so. Gluten is in a LOT of items. To make life easier to figure out what they are, here are some gluten sources for easy reference:


Grains:

Wheat
Oat
Barley
Rye
Triticale
Spelt
Kamut
Groats


Foods that can contain the items above include:

bagels
biscuits
cakes
wheat croutons
doughnuts
pasta
pretzels
stuffing
thickeners
tortillas
wafers
oat matzah
Passover flour
Communion wafers


Beverages:

Malted drinks or malt IN drinks
Ovaltine
Postum
Flavored tea or coffee
Beer and ale (fermented)
Some grain alcohols
especially if flavored
Flavored water
seltzer
Juice punch or drinks (additives, flavorings)


Sweets, Sweeteners, Flavoring, Spices, Baking Aids:

Artificial flavors
Artificial colors
Candy
Caramel coloring-foreign brands
Confectioners' sugar (flour, cornstarch)
Commercial cake decorations
Syrup (unless GF)
Seasonings may have wheat
Spice mixes (may have wheat)
Nutritional yeast (may contain gluten)
Brewer's yeast


Condiments and Sauces:

Soy sauce
Worchestershire sauce
Ketchup
mustard
mayonnaise
Flavored vinegar
malt vinegar
Yogurts and yogurt drinks with thickeners
Processed cheeses


Additives:

Dextrin (foreign brands)
Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
Citric acid
Hydrolyzed plant protein (if wheat)
Modified food starch can be wheat
Malt (barley)- assume "malt" means barley


Foods With Gluten:

Canned soups
bouillon cubes or powdered broth
Deli meats
sausages
hot dogs
Flavored yogurts
malted milk
Imitation seafood and bacon
Processed cheese spreads
Pudding
marshmallow cream
Stuffing mixes
breading


Other:

Chewing gum
Glues-stamps
envelopes
stickers
Nutritional supplements (binders, fillers)
Play-Doh
School glue
Nutritional supplements with alcohol if from a grain alcohol. (Note: even if alcohol is "burnt" off, grain resides will remain.)
